The Virtues of a Godly Mother

Introduction: Today we celebrate Mother’s Day: a special occasion to honor and recognize the significant role that mothers play in our lives. As a Christian community, we understand the importance of family and the essential role of a mother in shaping and nurturing her children in the faith. Today we will reflect on the virtues of a godly mother, and how we can honor and appreciate our mothers.

Read Proverbs 31:10-31

1. A Godly Mother is a Woman of Faith

  • A godly mother places her faith in God and trusts in His provision and guidance.
  • She teaches her children to have faith in God and to live by His Word.
  • A godly mother prays for her children and seeks God’s will for their lives.

2 Timothy 1:5: “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”

Luke 1:45-47: “And blessed is she that believed for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.”

1 Samuel 1:18: “And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.”

Psalm 127:3: “Lo, children are a heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”

Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

2. A Godly Mother is a Woman of Love

  • A godly mother loves her children unconditionally and sacrificially.
  • She demonstrates love through her actions: providing for her children’s needs, and supporting them spiritually.
  • A godly mother teaches her children to love others and to demonstrate Christ-like character qualities.

Titus 2:4: “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,”

Ephesians 6:4: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: But bring them up in the nurture and admonitions of the Lord.”

Colossians 3:14-15: “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”

1 Peter 4:7-8: “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”

1 Corinthian 13:4-7: “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Bearth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”

Proverbs 31:25: “Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”

3. A Godly Mother is a Woman of Compassion

  • A godly mother is a woman of compassion who shows kindness and empathy to others. She cares for the needy, is merciful towards those who have wronged her, and loves those who are hurting.
  • Her compassion is modeled after God’s own compassion, and she seeks to instill this same compassion in her children.
  • A godly mother, while showing compassion and kindness to others, models for her children how to care for those in need and to share God’s love.

Proverbs 31:20: “She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands, to the needy.”

Isaiah 49:15-16: “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.”

Matthew 9:35-36: “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.”

Colossians 3:12-13: “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

4. A Godly Mother is a Woman of Humility

  • A godly mother is a woman of humility who recognizes her own limitations and need for God’s guidance. She puts others before herself and is willing to serve in any capacity to which God calls her.
  • A godly mother is humble and teaches her children to be humble as well. She recognizes her dependence on God and seeks to serve Him and others rather than herself.
  • Her humility is a reflection of Christ’s humility, and she seeks to emulate His example in her own life. She teaches her children to be humble, to value others above themselves, and to trust in God’s wisdom and guidance.

Proverbs 31:30: “Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”

5. A Godly Mother is a Woman of Wisdom

  • A godly mother imparts wisdom and knowledge to her children, helping them to make wise decisions and to navigate life’s challenges.
  • She teaches her children to seek wisdom from God’s Word and to apply it to their lives. A godly mother sets an example of a wise and discerning life.

  • A godly mother is strong in her faith and is a source of strength for her family.
  • She perseveres through difficult times and trusts in God’s provision and protection.

He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.”

Isaiah 40:31: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint”

  • A godly mother is also patient and understanding with her children, recognizing that they are still learning and growing. She seeks to discipline them in love and to help them develop good character and godly habits.
  • Her patience is rooted in her trust in God’s timing and plan, and she seeks to instill this same trust and patience in her children. She teaches them to persevere through difficult times and to remain faithful to God, knowing He is in control and will never leave nor forsake them.

Let us thank God for the gift of motherhood and for the many sacrifices that mothers make for their families. Let’s commit ourselves to living out the virtues of a godly mother, seeking to follow their example and to pass on the faith to future generations.
