Treasures New and Old
Treasures New and OldRomans: Our Unsearchable God
Our God is truly unsearchable! He is an infinite God who loves us and cares for us and wishes only good for us. Paul seems to have a difficulty describing the depth of our God in this small section of Scripture. As I pondered what Paul was sharing, I, too, felt inadequate to describe the infinite riches that our God provides. So at the end of the explanation of this small section of Scripture, I added a ton of lines that provide either a name of God, Christ, or the Holy Spirit, or a title of them. I hope it encourages you this month.
Let’s dig in then . . .
Romans: 11:25-33: “O the depth of the riches both of this wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.”
What Paul is Trying to Teach
Verse 33 Notes: “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
- “Unsearchable” here refers to the impossibility of plumbing the depths of God’s knowledge, wisdom, riches, blessings, mercies, and His ways and judgements. They are not entirely unknowable, just that we will never exhaust them even if we dig continuously for eternity.
- Fair appears fifty-three times in fifty verses (E-Sword) and describes the weather, maidens, fruit, and other objects but not once does it describe God or His judgements. God is not fair as we tend to define it, but is just. He looks on the heart of man, not the outside facade.
- 1 Samuel 16:7: “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
- However, we are called to search Him out and learn of Him – consider:
- Matthew 11:29-30 (bold added): “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
- 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 (bold added): “Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to naught: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
- Isaiah 64:4: “For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waitheth for him.”
Verse 34-35 Notes: “For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?”
- Rhetorical questions: Obviously no one!
Verse 36 Notes: “For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.
- Paul is simply attempting to sum up that absolutely everything comes from God. All mysteries are by Him and revealed to those He wishes to know them.
- Ephesian 3:17-19: “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.”
- Isaiah 55:6-9: “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
